A Better Color Matching Sealant Process

Color matching sealant is crucial to achieving aesthetically superior outcomes on window, door, and siding installations. If a sealant color is slightly off, it can compromise the overall final appearance of a job – resulting in consumer dissatisfaction or even callbacks. With the introduction of new colors, textures and even recent two-tone options on the market, finding a brand with a larger, growing portfolio means more, reliable “exact” and “close” matches. Currently OSI® offers over 340 colors in SMP and solvent technologies, with matches to over 9600 building manufacturer products.

Sealant that provides a good color match must also possess the long-term utility performance required for these demanding applications including durability, flexibility, adhesion and UV resistance. And it must be easy to order and obtain nationwide through retail and pro distribution channels to ensure products don’t get delayed. This is why trade professionals, along with major window, door and siding manufacturers, Like James Hardie, Therma-Tru and Jeld-Wen, trust and recommend OSI® QUAD MAX® and QUAD® products for their color-matching sealant requirements.

How the OSI Color-Matching Process is Different

OSI takes a comprehensive approach to sealant color matching.  The core of sealant color matching is found in the science behind spectrophotometry. Spectrophotometry is the study of how light interacts with matter.  In a controlled environment, this device measures the amount of light that is absorbed, reflected, and transmitted by a sealant sample.   These values are then compared to the measurements produced by a sample of siding, window or trim from the manufacturer.  Ensuring a close numerical match is important but only the first step in the OSI color formulation process.

Because homes and daily lives do not take place in controlled environments, OSI analyzes the sealant under a variety of light sources including store light, daylight, and fluorescent light.  It takes into consideration the sealant texture, smoothness, and level of gloss that can change the appearance and how it is interpreted by the human eye.  It’s a meticulous process that requires scientific principles, specialized equipment and the expertise and judgement of specially-trained professionals to produce highly-accurate results.

What Contractors Need to Look for in a Color Match Sealant Like OSI

For contractors who need a color matched sealant, it’s important to look for a product that has:

Proven Long-Term Color Performance:  Expertly matched sealant needs to look great on day 1 and continue looking great decades later.  Color stability is dependent on many things, and varies depending on regions of the country which it is applied.  It’s also important to make sure sealant is applied in the recommended way to realize these full color performance results.  Properly applied QUAD MAX maintains color for years, meeting or exceeding the life expectancy of most siding, windows, and doors its installed with.

Manufacturer Recommendations: OSI works closely with many large window, door and siding manufacturers to ensure product compatibility and long-term reliability.  With the goal of achieving high consumer satisfaction, brands like Therma-Tru Doors, James Hardie and Jeld-Wen will often perform their own testing and make recommendations for products they believe provide the best results.  This is why OSI QUAD MAX is called out by name in many installation instructions as the recommended sealant or flashing brand for pros to use.

Adhesion, Flexibility & Durability: Functional performance is incredibly important when selecting an exterior sealant for any project.  OSI QUAD MAX meets or exceeds all ASTM C920 requirements.  It is Class 50 sealant with 5X stretch capability.  It adheres extremely well to most building material substrates.  Over time, it will not crack or dry out and does not shrink during the curing process.  Long-term you will see consistency in performance on both interior and exterior applications.
